WFSU Public Media is the parent organization for both The Florida Channel and The Florida Center for Interactive Media. You will also find listing for these organizations below. Although the leadership of these organizations communicate regularly, projects are usually organization dependent as the goals of each organization varies.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)
  • A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver’s License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Responsibilities

  • The Media Developer manages the design and appearance of the WFSU website to enhance the organization’s image as a provider comprehensive public broadcasting services to the community. Perform daily updates, postings, and resolve issues related to links, pages and files, and develop and implements procedures for collecting, editing and posting content to the WFSU website from internal and external sources. The position ensures the website’s usability within a variety of browser types, screen settings, and integration of audio/video streaming. The Media Developer will clearly communicate issues, changes, and updates that could impact services in a timely manner, assist in testing, rollouts, and maintenance of hardware and software that impact the performance of the website, suggests changes and modifications to senior staff to improve website functionality and user experience. Maintain the integrity of code, security, and UX design of digital technologies and related data structures.
  • The Media Developer is responsible for managing the design, functionality, and overall appearance of the WFSU website to enhance the organization’s image as a provider of comprehensive public broadcasting services to the community. This role involves performing daily updates, publishing content, resolving technical issues related to links, pages, and files, and developing procedures for collecting, editing, and posting content from both internal and external sources.
  • The Media Developer ensures the website remains accessible and user-friendly across various browsers, screen resolutions, and devices, including seamless integration of audio and video streaming. They will communicate changes, issues, and updates that may affect services in a timely and clear manner.
  • Additional responsibilities include assisting with the testing, deployment, and maintenance of hardware and software that impact website performance. The Media Developer also suggests changes and modifications to senior staff for improving website functionality and user experience, while maintaining the integrity of code, security protocols, and UX design standards across all digital platforms and data structures.
  • Serves as subject-matter expert on the use of the wfsu.org website as part of overall communication campaigns.
  • Stays current with evolving industry standards and trends.
  • Maintains WFSU’s digital strategy across multiple platforms.

Job Description:

The Florida Channel - located in Tallahassee, FL - produces 24/7, year-round coverage of all three branches of state government. Programming includes gavel-to-gavel coverage of a wide variety of state proceedings, along with documentary and public affairs programming covering issues of interest and importance to all Floridians. The programming is distributed to the public via satellite to stations/affiliates and is also available through a variety of video streaming services as well as https://thefloridachannel.org/.

Responsibilities

Serves as part of The Florida Channel Interstitial Programming and Promotions Unit under the supervision of the Supervisor of Interstitial Programming; travels to various locations around the state to conduct interviews, shoot B-roll, log, write and edit stories related to TFC programming; responsibilities primarily include videography and editing duties for the unit as well as backup videographer for new production; willing to travel, works on deadline, under minimal supervision and with a team in the delivery of programming which serves the mission of TFC; communicates extensively and proactively with supervisor, team and other TFC staff to understand needs and create the best possible product. Responsible for communication with Supervisor regularly about training needs, if any, coordinating with respective trainer(s) and giving status updates on tasks.

Serves as robotics camera director: responsible for operation of robotic cameras, switching appropriate shots for air, coordinating with MCR/Feeds and maintaining a professional on-air look during those productions; in addition, also serves in various daily production roles, each requiring proactivity and limited supervision, such as but not limited to: show director, technical/switcher director, audio operator, floor director and teleprompter operator which are necessary to meet organizational needs. In studio duties also include: studio camera operation, set changeover, studio microphone use, studio lighting operations and other equipment for various productions. Additional responsibilities include knowledge and operation of various equipment required to perform each task.

Serves as backup Remote Events Crew member on dispatched shoots with duties including equipment setup, camera operation and equipment breakdown as part of The Florida Channel’s efforts of television coverage of various state government meetings throughout Florida. Travel is part of the job. Administrative responsibilities and tasks include but are not limited to timely submission of travel documentation, travel and purchasing card receipts, personal work records, etc. 

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a related area and three years of related work experience in a broadcast television environment (or vocational/technical training in a related area and three years of related work experience in a broadcast television environment.)
  • Ability to travel as required and work a set assigned schedule M-F year-round as well as be flexible as needed. Hours will vary depending on department needs and may include weekends and evenings.
  • A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver’s License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Responsibilities

The News Director leads WFSU’s award-winning news operation, newsroom internship programs, and oversees journalism across on-air and digital programs and platforms. This position leads a talented team of reporters, producers, and hosts to coordinate daily and long-term coverage. The News Director works with other departments such as our Television and Digital teams within WFSU and among other News Directors at other Florida public media stations. 

  • In collaboration with the Director of Content, expand cross-platform content concepts with WFSU's video and online teams through regular formal and informal interactions that leverage all existing distribution channels and, in conjunction with staff and content director, explore new ways to bring WFSU content to broader audience.
  • Direct and manage news production to ensure that staff adhere to industry ethics and production standards. Maintain WFSU and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) standards and policies and manage newsroom scope and direction to determine newsworthiness and quality. Ensure the newsroom adheres to WFSU's social media policy. 
  • Serve as newsroom manager, coordinating the flow of news reporting and monitoring content needs for local segments within news blocks. Responsible for the day-to-day direction and oversight and editing of news and public affairs content on WFSU's radio and related online platforms to meet daily local and state content requirements.
  • Develop a plan for coverage and production of a variety of legislative and governmental affairs state news and feature stories for WFSU. Produce daily segments for broadcast on WFSU and for statewide distribution.
  • Work with news staff in providing story development input and insight. Maintain a schedule of coverage events for daily morning and afternoon news needs and communicate and direct coverage for statewide distribution when necessary. 
  • Serve as host and producer as needed. Serve as Producer for Capital Report working with host to identify content needs and oversee production of story materials, assist in editing scripts, and ensure all stories are produced from all sources and available in time for each show. Assist in coordinating and managing any national story submissions with news reporters and network.
  • Maintain communication with News Directors around the state for content needs. Work with other outlets for content development and sharing. Work to ensure that stories are available to other stations in a timely manner. Work with assignment editor to ensure regular communication with other news directors and the daily editing of stories and shows.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four years of experience related to media, communications, and/or marketing services; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to eight years. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver’s License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.
