What inspires you from WFSU Public Media? Here's this week's Voices That Inspire. My name is Lester Hut and I'm with Diverse Computing and I help out with recruiting and community outreach for the company. When we first moved here, my wife and I in 2003 to Tallahassee, I was brand new to the community. And the way that we got connected quite quickly was through meeting some pretty passionate residents here who kind of opened up their connections. And we want to try to give back from all the lessons and all the connections that we've made. And so we're now starting to kind of encourage the next generation of young professionals and kind of middle-level professionals here to kind of help out in the community. FSU and FAMU together every single year, they bring in over 100 new faculty. So that's 100 new families, typically from out of town, that moved to Tallahassee. What was fascinating was the universities usually did a decent job of welcoming the professors. But the community never did. We want them to feel a part of not just the university that they're working for, but also the community that they're living in. And so we started a program where on the first orientation week for those new faculty, we throw basically a networking party where we invite community leaders, government leaders, and just connectors in Tallahassee to meet with all the new faculty. I think it leaves a very positive impression and some of the connections that they form become friendships that they value for many years to come. It's also partly focusing on the spouses and the families that decided to relocate here. So we also help out with spouses who are looking for new jobs. Like we put their resumes out to all our network and hopefully kind of grease the wheels on their getting hired. And if both of them can get hired, they're much more likely to stay in Tallahassee and again have that positive impression of Tallahassee. My name is Lester Hut, and I'm in charge of a community outreach and recruiting for diverse computing here in Tallahassee. You're listening to voices that inspire.
Lester Hutt - We Want Them to Feel a Part of the Community They Are Living In
Lester Hutt of Diverse Computing explains how he became connected in the Tallahassee community after moving here more than 15 years ago. His point of inspiration is helping newcomer university faculty to gain and maintain a positive impression of Tallahassee by setting up opportunities for them to network and meet new friends.
