What inspires you from WFSU Public Media? Here's this week's Voices That Inspire. My name is Nicole Paddentary and I am professor at Florida State University and the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. So I was a special education teacher. Actually when I went to college like everyone else I wanted to be pre-med, but really what it came down to is what I was really interested in was understanding what's happening in the brain and what's happening in learning cognition as people grow and develop. And for me that no better and more interesting place to do that than amongst children who have learning differences because you can see what might be perceived to be as a deficit or a challenge, but you can also see it as a strength if you just flip it sideways, right? And try to understand how you can leverage these strengths they bring to the table so that they can thrive in life. And so I've always started I had that interest in that hook, but it's a nice you know special education for me as a nice mix between teaching and learning and neuroscience. So it actually turns out to be a really good balance for me. I am inspired by partnership. I think at the end of the day people are more like than they are different and I think one way in which we can know that about each other and therefore support each other is about partnering with each other. We all want the same outcomes for our children. We all want the same outcomes for our families. We all are generally striving towards the same end. If we can learn how to partner together towards that end, I think we all get farther together. And that's ultimately what we want. All boats rise with the tide, right? So I'm very passionate about trying to find ways for us to come together to partner together towards our shared outcomes and share our goals for children and families in this community. My name is Nicole Fanterry. I am a professor at Florida State University and the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. You're listening to voices that inspire.
Nicole Patton-Terry - Learn how to Partner Together

Nicole Patton-Terry is a professor at Florida State University, and the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. She is really interested in what happens in the brain while people grow and develop, so she works with children with learning differences. She sees their differences as strengths rather than deficits. Nicole believes people are more alike than different, and people can know that by partnering together and learning from one another.
